Too Good For Violence Objectives for Grades 6-8

Four interwoven components appear throughout the curriculum:

  • Conflict Resolution
  • Anger Management
  • Respect for Self and Others
  • Effective Communication

 

The following is a partial list of objectives in each component.

Conflict Resolution

  • Define Conflict
  • Discuss common approaches to conflict and their consequences
  • Write and apply a conflict resolution model

 

  • Discuss conflict as a normal, natural and inevitable part of life
  • Discuss/list reasons for conflict
  • Discuss conflict as an opportunity for learning and growth

 

  • Identify conflict resolutions as Lose/Lose, Win/Lose or Win/Win
  • Demonstrate Win/Win conflict resolution
  • Recognize personal ability and responsibility to solve conflicts peacefully

 

  • Distinguish between five conflict styles: competing, giving in, avoiding, compromising and going for win/win.
  • Demonstrate the benefits of cooperation in conflict situations
  • Identify different points of view in a conflict

 

  • Discuss the consideration of other points of view in solving a conflict
  • List the possible consequences of handling and mishandling conflicts
  • Define conflict escalation and de-escalation

 

  • Identify verbal and nonverbal conflict escalators.
  • Demonstrate de-escalating conflict
  • List strategies for resolving conflicts peacefully

 

  • Define bullying
  • List rules regarding bullying
  • Discuss the group’s responsibility to prevent/reduce bullying

 

  • Demonstrate appropriate, effective ways to respond to bullying
